A difficult country
A multiple crisis has been shaking this country for several years. The progressive dilapidation of the DRC's basic infrastructure such as lines of communication, schools and health services have not allowed the population to improve their living conditions in any way. Fortunately, since 2003, there has been peace, auguring well in days to come and allowing us to make contact with international financial institutions. This in turn should allow the economy which has suffered for so many years to take off again in the future. At world level, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is eleventh on the list of the 22 countries with the highest burden of tuberculosis and is also on the list of the nine countries hardest hit by leprosy.
Adding primary health care
The Damien Foundation's anti-leprosy backup efforts in the Congo date back to 1964. Our involvement with the anti-tuberculosis effort started in 1972. Since then, we have fought tuberculosis and leprosy jointly in the framework of the Ministry of Health's National Program. Moreover, the Damien Foundation has, since 1994, supported basic health care activities in health-designated areas such as Kayna and Lubero in Northern Kivu. Finally, since 1996, our Foundation has been involved in a Health Information System, an administrative backup project, with the local Ministry of Health, the Belgian NGOs Medical Mission Action (Memisa) and the Medical and Scientific Centre of the Free University of Brussels in Central Africa (Cemubac).
