The Damien Foundation in Nigeria
 |
Leprosy and Tuberculosis
The Damien Foundation supports the National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Control Programme in two of the country's 36 States, namely Osun and Oyo. Together, these two account for a population of more than eight million.
Unlike leprosy, which is less endemic here than elsewhere in the country, tuberculosis is a major problem. At 84.7% in Osun and 85% in Oyo, the cure rate is good. However, the number of patients detected is too low.
Expansion of the programme
The Foundation's five-year programme foresaw total coverage of these two States by the end of the year 2006. However, achieving this goal will demand more time and quite a lot of perseverance, for we face a lack of political determination on the part of the local health authorities. Moreover, in order to increase the detection rate, we are going to embark in 2006 upon active cooperation with 4 or 6 private institutions in each State
