The Damien Foundation in Brazil
 |
Above all tuberculosis
The Foundation supports the National Tuberculosis Control Programme in the Federal District, which comprises the Brasilia region i.e. the capital, the State of Goias and the city of Salvador de Bahia.
Because other organisations belonging to the International Federation of Anti-leprosy Associations supports the campaign against leprosy, we only support the Federal District which is less affected. However, it does receive quite a few patients in the shape of immigrants from other Brazilian States looking for work.
Supervision and training
In the capital, Brasilia, we have a coordination bureau. Our cooperation doctor is based in Salvador de Bahia, where his role is to supervise the health districts and participate in health workers' training.
In the Federal District, we grant financial support for tuberculosis and leprosy. We give bus tickets to destitute patients with the idea of making them more assiduous in attending health centres for supervised treatment.
