The Damien Foundation supports the Tuberculosis National Control Programme in 7 of Guatemala's 26 health regions. We give significant technical assistance, namely through a continuous process of reinforcing capacity based on training and regular supervision of health structures
Aside from drugs, wages and most laboratory equipment guaranteed for by the State, the Damien Foundation provides laboratory equipment, means of transport and supports the creation and printing of promotional and educational material for the population at large.
The AIDS issue
In the capital and in certain regions, up to 20% of tuberculosis patients who were tested for HIV were seropositive. Our challenge for the future is strengthening the coordination between tuberculosis and HIV programmes so that any tuberculosis patient who wishes to pass a test has the possibility to do so, and any co-infected person receives suitable care as required.
