The Damien Foundation in Panama
A catastrophic situation
Going back six years, practically no Directly Observed Treatment strategy existed in Panama. There was no systematic quality control for smear examination, nor any direct supervision of patients taking their medicines, nor patient follow-up. The abandon rate was nearly 40%.
Quality DOTS
Today, the Damien Foundation supports a national programme to control tuberculosis covering the whole of the country. Over a period of six years, we have progressively implemented a quality DOTS strategy. At first, it was in three regions and we then extended it to cover the rest of the country. Our support consists of technical assistance, situation analysis, training and monitoring, and setting up laboratories.
