The Damien Foundation in India
 |
Leprosy's centre of gravity in the world
This country is home to about 75% of the world's new cases of leprosy and the North of the country is the most affected. So, after starting in the South, the Foundation has progressively started to support a few States in the North where leprosy and tuberculosis are still very much part of the scene.
Leprosy and tuberculosis
The Foundation has also been supporting the campaign against tuberculosis. It acts via three types of projects, namely, reinforcing government health services in about forty districts, support for about a dozen local non-government organisations and three self-governing projects.
Surgery also
In this field, our support essentially consists in stepping up personnel capacity in government health services while playing an accompanying role in integrating the campaign against leprosy, while setting up and helping to function smoothly the anti-tuberculosis campaign by using the Directly Observed Treatment Strategy. The Foundation also takes a hand in correctional orthopaedic surgery to help persons whom leprosy has handicapped to recover a certain degree of mobility so they can play a role in society.
