The Damien Foundation in Uzbekistan
 |
An alarming situation
Since the nineties, tuberculosis has become much worse in Uzbekistan. Notification rates and mortality are currently among the highest in the former Soviet Union. These data are all the more alarming because more than half of cases are not traced and, what is more, multi-resistant tuberculosis is growing rapidly.
DOTS expanding
The Damien Foundation coordinates and supports technically the Directly Observed Treatment Strategy on a provincial level. In the provinces, we work closely with the local Ministry of Health. The main path for intervention is stepping up capacity of local health personnel in the technical, medical and management fields. Over the period 2004 to 2005, the Foundation trained 2,030 persons.
